Diamond clarity is a measure of the purity and rarity of the stone. Virtually all diamonds contain tiny natural identifiers, which are categorized as inclusions (internal characteristics) or blemishes (surface flaws). Our clarity guide helps you find a diamond that is “eye-clean” and offers the best value.
The GIA Clarity Scale
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond clarity under 10x magnification using the following scale:
- FL (Flawless): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and valuable.
- IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions and only insignificant blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
- VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions are so minute that they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.
- VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions observed with effort under 10x magnification, but typically invisible to the naked eye.
- SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification and may occasionally be visible to the naked eye. Excellent value.
- I1, I2, & I3 (Included): Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and are typically visible to the naked eye, sometimes affecting transparency and brilliance.
What is an “Eye-Clean” Diamond?
A diamond is considered “eye-clean” if its inclusions are invisible to the unaided eye when viewed from a distance of 8 to 12 inches under standard lighting. Often, diamonds in the VS2 or SI1 range look identical to Flawless diamonds to the naked eye, allowing you to maximize your budget for Carat weight or Cut quality.
